Academy Awards - Oscars statuette

It's time for a 'Faith and Film' podcast special. We're looking at the Academy Awards - the Oscars - with resident film critic Fr Peter Malone.

You may have seen the lavish LA ceremony - perhaps you spotted a British winner or two?

In all honesty, surprises were a little thin on the ground but there were plenty of talking points and we've picked four award-winning films to get the once-over.

Regular listeners will know we usually have to make a Skype link-up with Fr Peter from London to Melbourne, Australia. For this 'Oscars special' we're treated to the man himself in our studio for a face-to-face review session.

Here are the films featured in this episode:

  • The Theory of Everything
  • Still Alice
  • Boyhood
  • Whiplash

So who won what?

Briton Eddie Redmayne scooped Best Actor for his portrayal of Professor Stephen Hawking in the Theory of Everything. Julianne Moore took Best Actress playing an academic suffering from Alzheimer's in Still Alice.

Patricia Arquette collected the Best Supporting Actress gong for Boyhood and JK Simmons was awarded Best Supporting Actor for an uncomfortably intense performance as a music teacher in Whiplash.

Hear Fr Peter Malone talk about their performances and the films that provided the platforms for their talents.
