Detective Inspector Kevin Hyland of the Metropolitan Police and Bishop Patrick Lynch, Chair of the Office for Migration Policy, preview the human trafficking conference taking place in Rome on Tuesday, 8 May 2012.

DI Hyland heads up the Human Exploitation and Organised Crime unit - a branch of the Specialist Crime Directorate within the Metropolitan Police Service.

He spoke to catholicnews last year when a new partnership with the Bishops' Conference was in its infancy. The relationship is already yielding fruit with the police able to help 80 victims of trafficking from the Filipino community identified after a Bishops' Conference trafficking seminar in December 2011:

"There's real on-the-ground work going on. Last year's trafficking conference in Southwark led to a meeting with representatives of the Embassy for the Philippines. They knew Bishop Pat Lynch and, having met me, they were confident the victims could speak to me direct. Previously they may have been worried about immigration issues."

Bishop Patrick Lynch believes that awareness is key - particularly in our parishes:

"We need to help people be aware of the signs - the people who might be trafficked in our parishes. In lots of parishes there just might be people in this position. We need to open our eyes and open our ears - be sensitive to those on the fringes who might actually have had that experience of being trafficked."
