Bishop Hlib Lonchyna gives the Christian perspective on the Ukraine Crisis

14/03/2014 10:48 pm

Bishop Hlib Lonchyna, eparchial Bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Holy Family of London

All eyes are on Ukraine this weekend as voters in Crimea take part in a referendum to decide whether the region should stay part of Ukraine or join the Russian Federation.

US Secretary of State John Kerry met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in London today in a reportedly 'constructive' but fruitless attempt to calm rising international tensions over Ukraine and its sovereignty.

In the past three months, the country has seen its people rise up to oust former President Vicktor Yanukovych after Kiev's Independence Square protests where as many as 100 people were killed in one day in February.

Ahead of Sunday's referendum in Crimea, we welcome Bishop Hlib Lonchyna to the studio to give us the Christian context on the situation.

Bishop Hlib is the eparchial Bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Holy Family of London. It's the equivalent of a diocese for Ukrainian Catholics in the UK.
