The Nativity at Night

Our seasonal podcast series telling the Advent story using four paintings from the National Gallery’s world-famous collection was released in 2010.

Each Sunday in Advent we joined two culturally immersed priests who offered a thought-provoking insight into the works.

Father Christopher Whitehead, the Clifton Diocese's Director of Adult Education was joined in conversation by Dr James Hanvey SJ, Director of the Heythrop Institute for Religion, Ethics and Public Life and an expert in art and culture.

For the Fourth Sunday of Advent, Fathers Whitehead and Hanvey looked at 'The Nativity at Night' by Geertgen tot Sint Jans, thought to have been painted around 1490.

You can listen to the podcast by playing the mp3 from the player in the top-right corner of this page.

You can find out more about this 'Advent Art' painting on the National Gallery’s excellent website.

Here you will find background info on the image and a detailed version of 'The Nativity at Night'.

‘Advent Art’ was a joint production with the Clifton Diocese and the series was published on its award-winning website.
