Statement: Rohingya Crisis

22/05/2015 4:00 pm

The escalating humanitarian crisis facing the Rohingya people cannot be ignored by the international community.

It is more important than ever that Burma's authorities take decisive action to end the persecution, destitution and intercommunal tensions that are forcing thousands of people into perilous journeys on the Andaman Sea.

Neighbouring states such as Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines must also fulfil their own responsibilities to rescue those in danger and treat them in accordance with international law. I hope that the British government will work with its partners in the region to alleviate the crisis and that Catholics throughout England and Wales will join me in praying for our Rohingya brothers and sisters.
