Great Lakes Peace and Reconciliation Initiative

Great Lakes Region - DRC, Rwanda, Burundi

For over 20 years, violence has traumatised the people of the Great Lakes Region of Africa. War and conflict across Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo has left millions dead and many more displaced.

The Catholic and Anglican Churches of the three countries have organised a year-long campaign to promote peace and reconciliation in the sub-region following a recent visit to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales and Lambeth Palace.

In support of the commitment and dedication of these church leaders, the Archbishops of Canterbury and Westminster have written a joint letter to the bishops offering their prayers and solidarity to the Church leaders of the region.

The Great Lakes Peace and Reconciliation Initiative is being launched on Sunday 1 December in Goma (DRC) before crossing the border into Gisenyi (Rwanda).
