Fashion photo shoot for World Youth Day UK pilgrims

19/05/2011 9:00 am

In preparation for the biggest festival in the world – World Youth Day Madrid 2011 (16 – 21 August) - two young British pilgrims have been showcasing some of this year’s World Youth Day fashion range. Initiated by the late Pope John Paul II in 1985, World Youth Day brings together young people from across the globe to celebrate the Catholic faith with the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. This year’s event is expected to attract up to two million young people from across the world.

Catherine Senor,16, one of the models in the photoshoot and a World Youth Day pilgrim, says: “I’m really excited about World Youth Day because two million young people are going to be there. To prepare for it I’ve got a blog and I’m telling everybody about how great it’s going to be.”

A keen follower of fashion, Catherine thinks that the pleated maxi skirt is going to be the must-have item to pack in your World Youth Day rucksack this year – perfect for hot summer weather – Madrid in August will see temperatures soaring into the nineties. For young men, she thinks that the safari shirt is always a winner – a timeless classic. When it comes to colours, her top tip is white and blue for this summer’s season.

Other World Youth Day fashion pundits think that for girls, it’s small flower clips doubling up as brooches and for men and women, it’s the bandana which can be worn as a hair band; wrist band, belt, scarf or even just on the head as a protection from the sun. Nautical colors are good and they would also match the WYD logo (red, white, blue …)

3200 young pilgrims from the UK will be journeying by plane, train and automobile to Madrid this summer. It’s no ordinary summer holiday, with young people taking part in social action projects across Spain, before they journey to Madrid to see Pope Benedict XVI. When he visited the United Kingdom last September, he personally invited young UK pilgrims to come and join him in Madrid:

"...Let me finish these few words by warmly inviting you to join me next year in Madrid for World Youth Day. It is always a wonderful occasion to grow in love for Christ and to be encouraged in a joyful life of faith along with thousands of other young people. I hope to see many of you there!" Vigil at Hyde Park, 18 September 2010

The World Youth Day logo symbolises young people from across the world beneath the cross, united to form the crown of Mary, the patron saint of Madrid.
