Bishop Roche expresses his shock at the shooting of a Police Officer

18/11/2005

The Rt Rev Arthur Roche, Bishop of Leeds, expressed his shock at the tragic news of the events in Bradford on Friday. “ I would first of all,” he said, “ wish to send my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the young Police Officer so tragically gunned down while carrying out her duty. I would also like to say that our thoughts and prayers are with the other Officer who was injured.

"These two people were doing their duty in an ever-increasingly dangerous world. They acted with courage, as they and their colleagues do every day of their working lives. Their work allows us to live in peace and safety and we are profoundly grateful for it.

"I know that the Catholic Community of not only Bradford, but the whole of West Yorkshire, joins with me in saying that these Police Officers will be in our prayers. The world we live in today is increasingly violent and we hold in the highest esteem those women and men who dedicate their lives to make ours safer.

"Again, we are faced with an act of violence; as Christians we must show that evil will not win and we will reach out the hand of friendship to our sisters and brothers caught up in the front-line of maintaining order."
