Advent Reflection: Bishop Declan Lang on what we need to do before it's too late

21/12/2015 10:33 am

Bishop Declan Lang is the Bishop of Clifton and Chair of the International Affairs department. In his Advent reflection, he addresses a crucial Advent question and encourages us to pledge ourselves to work for justice and peace in our everyday lives.

"What must I do before it's too late? What parts of my life must I look at? And it's not just myself I'm talking about and reflecting upon, it's not just everyone around me, it's a question I think for nations to look at. What must we do if we are ready to celebrate the peace that Christmas brings?

"There's a need for all of us to have a deep respect for one another, but if there is to be peace, there must be justice. Justice is not something that just happens justice is something people have to work for.

"Whatever part of the world we live in - whether it's our own country, the Middle East, or where there are people suffering injustices - the season of Advent is a time to remember them and to pledge ourselves to work for justice and peace in our everyday lives.

"Perhaps then I can answer the question: What must I do in order not to be late for Christmas? I must change, and change in such a way that I am an instrument of God's peace."

The Year of Mercy, given to us by Pope Francis, presents the ideal opportunity to focus on God's mercy and forgiveness.
