Read and Reflect using Scripture

A lady reads the Bible in church

Read and reflect using Scripture to consider family situations in the Bible and how they relate to our own lives. In this section, we offer suggestions for small groups.

Starter questions...

Some general ‘starter’ conversation questions prior to the scripture reflection to help you think about your own ‘call’ ‘journey’ and ‘mission’ as family:

  • What does it mean for you, to be ‘called’? And ‘called’ as a family?
  • What do you think or feel about ‘being on a journey’ as a family – what does that mean to you?
  • What about the word ‘mission’? What does that mean? How might it apply to family life, and your family life?

How to...

Simple suggestion, a ‘How to’ share Scripture together:

  • Sit quietly together for a moment. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you in a short prayer, eg ‘O that today may we listen to your voice’ or ‘Come Holy Spirit, help us to listen’.
  • One person reads the scripture passage out loud, slowly
  • Everyone listens, noticing, like a slow walk through a garden – what catches your attention? A word, a picture, a little phrase.
  • Allow a short silence
  • Read it once more, out loud.
  • Then ask the question: What word, phrase or picture caught your attention? Begin to talk about your lives.
  • We have offered specific questions with each Scripture story, to help the conversations.

To encourage conversation...

To draw each conversation together, you might like to consider the following questions:

  • How does this story ‘speak’ to us about our ‘call’ to be a family?
  • How does it speak to our ‘journey’ as a family?
  • How does it speak to us about our ‘purpose’ or ‘mission’ as a family?
  • What support do we need from the Church?
  • What is already available? What needs to be developed?
  • From our family life experience, what do we offer that could enrich the life of the Church?

Closing prayer

Offer a final closing prayer of thanksgiving, each in your own words, before saying the family prayer of the Church together:

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. Amen.
