Luke 2: 22-40

Simeon and Anna, Gospel of Feast of the Holy Family, 28 December 2014

After the ‘wondering’ about what struck you, or caught your attention, begin to talk about the life of Mary and Joseph and the infant Jesus, their encounter with Simeon and Anna, and the effect of this on their faith, and your lives, and your faith.

Some of the following questions might help the conversations:

  • How might Mary and Joseph have felt as they presented Jesus in the Temple as a baby, as the law required? And in their encounter with Simeon, and then Anna? Does this echo with any experience in your family life?
  • What do you ‘wonder’ about your own children/grandchildren/wider family?
  • When have you needed a ‘wise’ and thoughtful person in your life?
  • Who have been the ‘wise’ people for you? And in your family experience? What makes them ‘wise’?
  • How do you engage across the generations in your family? What are the challenges and the joys?
  • How do Church teaching and the sacraments support you in your family life?
  • In what ways has the Church supported your living and sharing of faith as a parent or grandparent with your children/grandchildren?

The key questions to draw the conversation together:

  • How does this story ‘speak’ to us about our ‘call’ to be a family?
  • How does it speak to our ‘journey’?
  • How does it speak to us about our ‘purpose’ or ‘mission’ as a family?
  • What support do we need from the Church?
  • What is already available? What needs to be developed?
  • From our family life experience, what do we offer that could enrich the life of the Church?
