Second Vatican Council: Lumen Gentium

Our 'Year of Faith' tweets take a closer look at Lumen Gentium – the Vatican II Dogmatic Constitution on the Church.

Summary

Lumen Gentium: The Dogmatic Constitution on the Church

Lumen Gentium describes the nature of the Church in her deepest identity. The Church is the whole People of God and is a mystery or sacrament. It is served by the hierarchy – the authority of the pope and bishops is exercised in a collegial mode. The laity participate fully and directly in the Church's mission.

The mystery of the holy Church is manifest in its very foundation. The Lord Jesus set it on its course by preaching the Good News, that is, the coming of the Kingdom of God, which, for centuries, had been promised in the Scriptures:

"The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand"(18). LG 5
