Bishop Peter Doyle writes to the Northampton diocese:

What a wonderful opportunity the Year of Faith beginning this October offers to us all in the parishes and communities of the Diocese of Northampton.

Pope Benedict’s letter announcing the Year of Faith is entitled “The Door of Faith”. That gives us a clue about this special year. It is a year for opening doors!

It is a year to open wide the door of my heart in prayer and in the sacraments to God. For the gift of faith is a living relationship with the God who is love; with the Father who in the fullness of time sent his Son for our salvation; with the Son, Jesus Christ, who in the mystery of his death and resurrection redeemed the world; with the Holy Spirit who leads the Church across the centuries as we await the Lord’s glorious return. That faith is nurtured through prayer and the sacraments.

It is the year for our communities of faith in the parishes and in the schools to open the door of faith to deeper prayer, to opportunities to teach and learn about the faith, and to the most worthy and devout celebration of the sacred mysteries of our faith, especially the Sunday Mass.

It is a year to open the doors of our hearts and communities outwards to be instruments of the Holy Spirit in spreading the good news of God’s life and love, and lead others to faith in Jesus Christ.

To equip us to open those doors, may I encourage you in your life of prayer, urge you to have a better understanding of what we believe, and confirm you as true witnesses by living your faith with integrity.

To sum up, the Year of Faith is a year for prayer, catechesis, liturgy and witness.

With every blessing,

+ Peter - Bishop of Northampton
