Man Reading at Mass in Liverpool Cathedral

The Archdiocese of Liverpool opens the Year of Faith with a celebration of Evening Prayer with the theme:

‘There was a man sent by God whose name was John’.

The programme of family catechesis in the Archdiocese will form a cornerstone of the 'Year of Faith'. Pope Benedict speaking at the General Audience on Wednesday 28 December 2011 said, ‘The Holy Family is an icon of the domestic Church, which is called to pray together. The family is the first school of prayer where, from their infancy, children learn to perceive God thanks to the teaching and example of their parents. An authentically Christian education cannot neglect the experience of prayer. If we do not learn to pray in the family, it will be difficult to fill this gap later. I would, then, like to invite people to rediscover the beauty of praying together as a family, following the school of the Holy Family of Nazareth’.

During the year there will be a series of twelve Holy Hours in the Archdiocese each themed on the documents of Vatican II. They will be celebrated on Sundays to emphasise the importance of the Day of the Lord.

It is hoped that there will also be four one day conferences for both clergy and laity in celebration of Vatican II. The emphasis of these gatherings will be on the role of the laity within the Church. Pope Benedict, speaking at the parish of San Giovanni della Croce in Colle Salario in the northern part of the Diocese of Rome in March 2010 said: ‘I was happy to hear that your community wishes to promote, in regard to the vocations and the role of consecrated persons and the laity, the co-responsibility of all the members of the People of God. As I already noted, this demands a change in mentality, above all with regard to the laity, “moving from considering them ‘collaborators’ of the clergy to recognising them as truly ‘co-responsible’ for the being and action of the Church, promoting a mature and dedicated laity in this way”
