Vatican II Conference in Leeds - June 2012

Around 200 delegates met at Leeds Trinity University College, 26 - 29 June, for an International Theological Conference titled Vatican II, 50 years on: The New Evangelisation.

The purpose of the event was to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council, to reflect on the impact of the Council and deepen understanding of the New Evangelisation. The conference provided a unique opportunity to revisit that seminal event which had such a profound impact on the life of the Catholic Church and its mission. In particular, the Council began an engagement with the modern and secularized world through a renewed proclamation of the Gospel. Blessed John Paul II described this as the ‘new evangelization’, and in 2010, Pope Benedict XVI confirmed this priority by creating the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization.

Leeds Trinity organised the event in conjunction with the Centre for Catholic Studies at Durham University. This is the first in a series to celebrate Catholic Higher Education in the UK.

Biography

The Archbishop was born at Codogno, near Milan, in 1951. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Rome in 1976.

In 1981, after publishing his doctoral dissertation on Hans Urs von Balthasar, he was called to teach Fundamental Theology at his alma mater, the Pontifical Gregorian University, where he rose to become Professor-in-Ordinary. In 1994 he was appointed Consultor to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and a year later became Rector of the Church of San Gregorio Nazianzeno and consequently the de facto chaplain to the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Italian Parliament.

In 1998 he was consecrated auxiliary bishop of Rome and, in addition to this, in 2002 he became Rector of the Pontifical Lateran University. In 2008, while remaining Rector of the Pontifical Lateran University, he was appointed President of the Pontifical Academy for Life and elevated to the dignity of Archbishop. A member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes, Archbishop Fisichella is the author and editor of numerous publications, among which, as co-editor with R. Latourelle, S.J., is the Dictionary of Fundamental Theology (New York, 2000).
